This music seems to alternate between psychic music that comes from somewhere deeply embedded in the subconscious to almost childishly silly sounds, creating something that is reminiscent of one of my favourite albums, Current 93’s “I Have a Special Plan for This World”. While it isn’t as deeply moving as that album, “If The Devil’s In The Details Then How Many Details Can You Fit Upon a Match?” is a generally creepy trip through the psyche that is worth some attention. Certainly it is a very psychedelic album. You can almost feel the acid dripping off some these tracks. Most tracks have one or two loops that are repeated for the entirety of the track, thus invoking very primitive/tribal sounding themes at times. These loops are then joined by weird warblings, yelps, squishy sounds, sparkly sounds, horns, and a variety of spooky ambient textures.

Track 7 “In the Haze You Can See so Much Everything, It’s Nothing” breaks up the loop filled nuttery for a bit with some nice drones, then it’s back to crazy town with “Very Alone Out There Tonight” which doesn’t sound at all melancholy as the title suggests. Rather it sounds like the diseased ruminations of a homeless drug addict schizophrenic losing their mind. This album reminds me at times of The Residents darker material, or perhaps a circus as seen through the time warped haze of a dream.

The Painful Leg Injuries make an attempt at unique quality artwork with transparencies, but I think the packaging could have been a bit more professional, and I am not usually a fan of CD-R releases by and large. As a bonus, the al bum comes with a DVD of original video material. The drawbacks to this release are few, and “If The Devil’s In The Details Then How Many Details Can You Fit Upon a Match?” is a quality piece of music that should please fans of Coil, Current 93, and The Residents, or fans of dark cerebral music in general.
